These are usually caused by differing absorption rates between floor boards. Be sure to wipe back any surface oil which is apparent as shiny patches, before the oil 'tacks off'.  Controlling temperature, humidity and air exchange has a large bearing on the dry time and initial appearance of natural oil finishes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMost important is to be secure in the knowledge that an oiled floor will improve with time. Blemishes, scratches and variations will even out, gaining a rich patina, like an old, cherished, church floor.  Adding Microwax to your wash water when damp mopping, enhances this natural change and Microwax can be used at any time to cloth out surface marks.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJava Resin Oil\u003c\/strong\u003e is a 'water resistant' finish not 'water proof', when fully cured (4-6 weeks).  Certain timbers, particularly Matai and Rimu are particularly subject to water spotting and extra care should be taken to ensure the timber has absorbed sufficient oil to fill the grain to the surface. Water droplets should not be left to sit on the surface. In some cases (particularly Matai) the hardness of the heart timber combined with the inherent resin in the boards can prevent sufficient oil from absorbing and thus not give adequate protection from water staining.  In this instance we recommend a further topcoat of \u003cstrong\u003e'\u003c\/strong\u003eJava High Solid Oil' followed by extra treatments of 'Microwax'. Over twenty years we have provided oils for thousands of timber floors and the vast majority obtain a beautiful resilient finish.  All timbers vary and as we have no control over the timber, the preparation, or the application;  we can not provide any assurances or guarantees.  We make samples readily available, so please test first.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePlease note:\u003c\/strong\u003e   All natural products are affected by the sun. Excessive amounts of strong sunlight and UV rays will have a detrimental affect on wooden floors, possibly changing the colour and drying out the timber.  The most dramatic change is usually within the first 6 months of application. It is recommended that rugs and furniture be moved periodically to avoid areas of uneven colour. The affects of UV can be greatly reduced by choosing window treatments which minimalise the transmission of ultra violet light from the sun.  A less common issue but one to be aware of is, the possible effect of ‘Dark Yellowing’ on all oil based finishes. Old damaged and weathered coatings should be completely removed and then treated as a new surface.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eApplication: Apply the resin oil sparingly and evenly, using a paint brush, roller or suitable applicator.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRemove any excess oil which has not penetrated after 10-20 minutes (visible as shiny areas), using a clean, absorbent cloth. For large areas use an old towel on the end of a broom.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLet dry for 12 hours between coats. Depending on the timber, several applications of resin oil should be applied. A typical floor will require two coats of oil.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHeavy traffic areas are best treated with three coats.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA final coat of undiluted ‘natur microwax’ is optional and can be applied to give the floor a slightly richer patina. Depending on the timber, several applications of Java High Solid should be applied. A typical floor will require two fine coats of oil.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHeavy traffic areas are best treated with three fine coats.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA final coat of undiluted ‘natur microwax’ is optional and can be applied to give the floor a slightly richer patina. For joinery, hand brush across the grain and then dry brush with the grain to an even finish without brush marks. The product can be cloth applied (lighter colour intensity). Pour the product into a paint tray and dip the tip of the brush, dabbing evenly on the tray spreader. First brush across the grain to massage the colour into the timber. These are usually caused by differing absorption rates between floor boards. Be sure to wipe back any surface oil which is apparent as shiny patches, before the oil 'tacks off'.  Controlling temperature, humidity and air exchange has a large bearing on the dry time and initial appearance of natural oil finishes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMost important is to be secure in the knowledge that an oiled floor will improve with time. Blemishes, scratches and variations will even out, gaining a rich patina, like an old, cherished, church floor.  Adding Microwax to your wash water when damp mopping, enhances this natural change and Microwax can be used at any time to cloth out surface marks.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJava Resin Oil\u003c\/strong\u003e is a 'water resistant' finish not 'water proof', when fully cured (4-6 weeks).  Certain timbers, particularly Matai and Rimu are particularly subject to water spotting and extra care should be taken to ensure the timber has absorbed sufficient oil to fill the grain to the surface. Water droplets should not be left to sit on the surface. In some cases (particularly Matai) the hardness of the heart timber combined with the inherent resin in the boards can prevent sufficient oil from absorbing and thus not give adequate protection from water staining.  In this instance we recommend a further topcoat of \u003cstrong\u003e'\u003c\/strong\u003eJava High Solid Oil' followed by extra treatments of 'Microwax'. The affects of UV can be greatly reduced by choosing window treatments which minimalise the transmission of ultra violet light from the sun.  A less common issue but one to be aware of is, the possible effect of ‘Dark Yellowing’ on all oil based finishes.
